Band wins at National Eisteddfod and another new arrival is welcomed to the world
The Cross Keys Silver Band recently competed in Section 4 of the National Eisteddfod of Wales and came away from the Maes as the winners. Then just a few days after the outstanding victory in Cardiff came the news that Debbie Norris, the band's 2nd cornet player and her partner David Bunce were celebrating the arrival of their new born son.
On Saturday 2nd of August the band entered the Eisteddfod for the first time in 30 years, incidently 30 years ago was the last time Cardiff hosted the event. The band were competing in Section 4 and were one of the five bands entered. This contest is extra special as it is one of the only contests in the world which is broadcast live on Television, the Welsh Language channel S4C providing first class coverage of each bands performance. With the band drawn 2nd they commenced their programme with Philip Sparke's arrangement of the challenging 'Liberty Fanfare', this was followed by principal cornetist, Karla Howe's classy performance of 'Georgia on my mind' by Hoagy Carmichael. Next up the band produced a fine performance of The Beatles' classic 'Hey Jude' they then ended the programme with Andrew Duncan's 'Highland Cathedral'. Audjudicator Kevin Gibbs was obivously impressed with what he had heared and placed the band in first place with Crwbin finishing as runners up and Loughor finishing in third place. This was a fantastic result for the band who now look to progress even further as they prepare for the next contests both in September at Wychaven and then the National Finals of Great Britain in Harrogate. The band were not only featured on S4C on the weekend but were also featured on ITV Wales' The Visit, in which the band were shown in preparation for the Eisteddfod, through to the day and performance itself as well as the celebrations and reaction following the band's win. The band are extremely grateful to Newport Borough Brass who kindly allowed three of their players to perform with the band at the Eisteddfod. Thanks to Jack Lapthorn (Baritone), Kellie Phillips (cornet) and Emma Bray (percussion) without whom the victory would not have been possible. Next up came more good news and happiness as on 6th August 2008, the band's 2nd Cornet player Debbie Norris gave birth to Taylor Luke. Congratulations are extended to Debbie and partner David, as well as their families on the birth and we look forward to meeting the new arrival very soon. 70 Comments
